Why isn't TalkType detecting audio?

There may be a few reasons why your TalkType app isn't able to pick up any audio from your microphone or generate text. In this article, we'll go through a few common hurdles and how to resolve them.

Checking Security & Privacy

First, we'll need to check that TalkType has the correct permissions on your Mac.

Step 1: Open System Preferences

Step 2: Select "Security & Privacy". Go to the "Privacy" tab.

Step 3: Make sure the tick icon (✅) is active next to TalkType in the Microphone, Accessibility and Automation sections.

If TalkType isn't active in any of these sections, you'll need to add it.

Select the padlock icon (?) in the bottom left and confirm your computer admin details. This will allow you to make changes to your privacy settings.

Select the add icon (+) and select TalkType from the list of available apps.

Click the padlock icon (?) again to save the changes to your Mac.

Checking audio input

Next, we'll check that the correct microphone is set up as the default audio input on your Mac.

Step 1: Open System Preferences on your Mac

Step 2: Select "Sound". Go to the "Input" tab.

Step 3: Make sure your microphone is highlighted to select it as the default input.

Checking firewall access

TalkType needs to connect to the internet to work properly. If you're using TalkType on a network managed by your workplace or university, then your organisation's firewall could be blocking TalkType from working properly.

What's a firewall?

A firewall is a network security process that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic. It can restrict access to certain domains.

TalkType needs to connect to two URLs to work properly:

We would recommend checking in with your own organisation's IT department to make sure both of these domains are allowed on your network.

Making sure your macOS is up to date

Sometimes the internal audio settings on Mac will need resetting so that TalkType can link up to the microphone. Updating your macOS can reset these audio settings.

Step 1: Click to the Apple logo in the top left of your screen and select "About This Mac".

Step 2: You can check to see if your macOS needs updating by selecting "Software Update".

Checking you have the right version of TalkType installed

On the TalkType downloads centre, there are two versions of TalkType available;

  • A version for macOS Monterey & macOS Big Sur
  • A version for macOS Catalina

If you've installed the wrong version, the TalkType app won't be able to start.

You can check which version of macOS you have by clicking the Apple logo in the top left of your screen and selecting "About This Mac".

If TalkType isn't opening on your Mac, we recommend deleting the app (Finder > Applications > Right-click "TalkType" and select "Move to bin") and downloading and installing the correct version again from the downloads centre

You may need to reset your TalkType license key during the reinstallation process; if this is the case then you can request a reset here.
